Version 0.17.0

Breaks compatibility
  • The Dark Zone is now seven layers deep, from Rose at the wall to the Heart sixty-three kilometres past it, and every layer is harder and richer than the one before.
  • The sulphur air is a dose you carry: a roof no longer saves you, only a sealed room with a scrubber running does. Masks slow it, filters run out, and a Create backtank stops it while its air lasts.
  • Past the wall a lethal blow knocks you down for a minute instead of killing you, so a friend can pull you up. Radios, flares and flashlights help you find each other.
  • What is true of you and of the ground under you is now a row of signs beside the hotbar. Hold J to have them named.
  • The Heart itself is not built yet: its halls come in a later update, and until then nobody hears it beat. Update your pack - this version cannot be joined with the old one.

The client has to be updatedThis release changed the pack, and a client older than it is turned away at the door. Update the pack in the launcher before you next join.

The full list of changes

Seven layers

  • Rose and Maria carry the names of the walls that once stood there; past Maria the places were named by the people who came back: Ash, Hush, Undertow, Unmade and the Heart.
  • Monsters grow harder, not just more numerous, with every layer, and new creatures live only past the wall: some from Ash, worse ones from the Hush.
  • Caches hold more the deeper they lie, and refill more slowly.
  • Fields of wrong air hide relics. A relic wears to powder if you carry it at home, a chest keeps it, and an ender chest turns it to powder - a box inside the ender chest too.

Air and sealed rooms

  • The dose builds faster the deeper you are and faster still in flight. Unmasked, the Hush poisons you in about half an hour and the Heart in about eight minutes.
  • A scrubber turned by Create cleans a room it can seal; a door left open lets its reserve of clean air run out, so two doors make an airlock.
  • Goggles or an air gauge show a trail of smoke from the scrubber to the leak, and a gauge tells a comparator how much clean air is left.

Food and filters

  • Nothing ordinary grows or breeds in sulphur: crops stand still and animals will not breed outside a sealed room, so build a greenhouse and a barn inside one.
  • Food caught or killed out there carries its taint home, and a furnace, smoker or campfire does not clean it. Bring rations.
  • Sulphurbloom grows only past the wall and outside clean air, and filters are made from its flower.
  • The black market past the wall sells two pale filters for 48 coins, a yellow filter for 160, four beef dinner rations for 64 and four cans of bread for 32.

Signs beside the hotbar

  • Your own signs stand to the left of the hotbar and the ground's to the right; the strip above it keeps the warnings about what lies ahead, and names a new layer once as you cross into it.
  • A renegade now wears a sign in the corner, beside the reaper's and the judge's.
  • The signs have new, sharper drawings.

What changed in the pack

  • Added: Hardcore Revival, Corpse, Encumbered, Simple Radio, Provisioner's Delight, Create Goggles, Dynamic Flashlight, Simple Flares, Create Train Lights, Attract to Sound, Sound Physics Remastered, Presence Footsteps, Distant Thunders, Subtle Effects, Ambience Mini, and four mods whose creatures live only past the wall.
  • Whoever falls leaves a body holding what they carried, and anyone may take from it. Quark's Totem of Holding is switched off, because with it no body ever formed.
  • Weight counts everywhere: a heavy load slows you on both sides of the wall.
  • Ender chests can no longer be crafted. The ones already standing still open. An endersoul hand can no longer be made by tossing an ender eye among fragments.
  • The map in the window keeps recording new ground after a long journey; before, it stopped until the game was restarted.
  • A client with the old pack is refused before the usual message can appear: update the pack to join.
